- Married Eliza Hanson (from Chatham in Kent) at St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, on 11th February 1839.
1841, Hopper St, Bishopwearmouth. Aged 25, a shipwright, living with his parents.
The 1851 census shows Thomas (a 33 year old shipwright) and Eliza (aged 36) living at 33 Back Brougham Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland with their children: Charlotte (aged 9) and Emily (aged 4). All were born in Sunderland save for Eliza, who was born at Chatham in Kent. 12 year old daughter Eliza Burnkell [sic] was staying at the time with her widower grandfather, George Hanson (a 70 year old pensioner shipwright, from Monkwearmouth) and her aunt Mary Hanson (a 40 year old spinster, born - like Eliza's mother, Eliza, at Chatham) at 37 Ogden Street, Deptford, Sunderland.
The 1861 census shows Thomas (a 43 year old upholsterer) living (with 2 other families) at 8 Liddle Terrace, Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland. with his children: Charlotte (a 19 year old dressmaker) and Emily (aged 14). He is said to be married, but there is no sign of Eliza. In fact she appears as a 46 year old dressmaker (a servant) living with Elizabeth Smith (a 43 year old servant) at Biddick, Whitburn.
The 1871 census shows Thomas (a 54 year old upholsterer) living at 25 Society Lane, Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland with his wife Eliza (aged 56).

The 1891 census shows Thomas (a 75 year old widowed cabinet upholsterer) living alone at 22 Duke Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland.
