From our records I can tell you that Arthur Coulthurst
- b.19.10.1889
- He was appointed to Parr's Bank 22 November 1905 (also dated as 19.10.1906) as an apprentice. I am afraid I have not been able to find out where.
- He became a clerk at Parr's Bank Manchester Branch in 1910, presumably once he had completed his apprenticeship, and remained there until 1928. By this point he had become Assistant to the Chief Clerk though we do not have an exact date for this.
Parr's Bank merged with London County & Westminster Bank in 1918 to become London County Westminster & Parr's Bank. The name was shortened to the much more straightforward Westminster Bank in 1923
In 1928 he became Chief Clerk at Loughborough High Street branch of Westminster Bank until his death on 1.3.1932
We do have a number of photographs of the London County Westminster & Parr's Bank Manchester Chief Office from the time your grandfather worked there, including internal shots with staff at work. We also have an external image of Loughborough branch from about the time he worked there.
The position of Chief Clerk would only really have existed in larger branches as they would have been responsible for the other clerks at the branch. Accountants could be considered a managerial step above as they held responsibilities across the whole branch. Manchester City Office, where Arthur was Assistant to the Chief Clerk, was a very large branch with 30-50 clerks so the job would have held a lot of responsibility. Loughborough had about 10 clerks.
The Institute of Banker's examinations were extremely extensive and took a few years to complete. Candidates were required to answer questions on English, History, Geography, Foreign languages as well as Algebra and Book Keeping. I believe a small Institute of Bankers archive collection is held at London Metropolitan Archives so they may have examples of exam papers available. [3]
