- Taken from the booklet, "St. Hilda Hinderwell, North Yorkshire, Monumental Inscriptions". by Cleveland Family History Society.
"In memory of Richard ANDREW master mariner died 19th June 1783 aged 69 years. Also his wife Mary died 5th Sept 1794 aged 79 years. Also Richard their son d 23 June 1794 at St Georgia in the West Indies - remainder illegible".
This has been assumed to relate to St. Georges, Granada. However, it could equally refer to St. George on the Island of St. Kitts & Nevis, where The Mary, under the Captainship of Richard's brother John, was sailing at the time. See: https://ourancestralheritage.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=2113
Historical Reference
In 1794, while the French Revolutionary Wars were ongoing, St. Kitts was a British colony that had been returned to Britain in 1783 following a temporary French capture in 1782. Although the major naval Battle of St. Kitts occurred in 1782 and the French briefly occupied the island, 1794 saw the colony under British control as part of the ongoing conflict between Britain and France.
