  He volunteered for service in the army and joined on 25th April 1939, well before war was formally declared in September 1939. He always joked, when asked as to why his preference was for the army; "Well, I can't swim and I can't fly but I can walk, so I had no real choice!" He never did learn to swim and he never boarded an aeroplane, due to an innate fear of flying. He was assigned to the 5th BN. The Green Howards as a Private but very quickly promoted to Lance Corporal. A letter to his mother dated 21 July 1939, indicates that he was already undertaking trading at a Camp near Lancaster but that he hasn't received his uniform yet, nor his boots! He is also not impressed with the food, neither the quality, nor the quantity and is mightily tired of bread and jam! He has at least managed to avoid all the square bashing, having been appointed to the role of Company Clerk. In August he was transferred to the 7th BN based at R.A.F Dishforth but a few months later had his Lance stripe removed by his C.O. for using improper language to a private soldier. The following month he was docked a days pay for being absent without leave for several hours. He disembarked in France on 25th April 1940 as part of a reinforcement of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), but he was home on the 13th June, having been rescued from the beaches at Dunkirk. He turned 21 on the 3rd May. Throughout the rest of 1940 he is posted to the Poole area in Dorset, before being transferred to Aintree Coy in Liverpool followed by Depot Coy in Richmond, Yorks. In September 1941 he was transferred to H.Q. and attends a Radio Mechanics course in Glasgow. Throughout 1941 & 1942 he has a number of U.K. postings and attends several courses on Radio Mechanics, eventually being successful in the examinations in March 1943. He was transferred to R.E.M.E (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) in October 1942. He remained with R.E.M.E for the rest of the war, having a number of further postings around the country. He has found a niche as a Pay and Accounts Clerk and receives a glowing report from his Captain in February 1946. He was demobbed on 25 April 1946 but remained in the Territorial Reserve Army until 10 February 1954 but was not fully released from all reserve liability until 30 June 1959. He was awarded the 1939/1943 Star, the Defence Medal and the Efficiency Medal and retained a life long interest in amateur radio mechanics.
