Email reply from the Archivist at Rochester.

Thank you for your email concerning the collision of the brig Indiana. I have found the following report in the minutes of the Committee of Assistants of Rochester Bridge for 27 July 1816:

``The coal brig Indiana of Newcastle, Newark Burnikell Master having done considerable damage to the starlings of the wharf in lease to Mr. Matthews [John Burton Matthews, one of the bridge tenants who ran a coal business], and Mr. Alexander [Bridge Engineer Daniel Alexander] having estimated that they cannot be repaired for a sum less than 70 Ordered that the Clerks do apply to the said Master for that sum & in case it should be necessary, that they do use such legal measures to compel payment as shall be requisite."

There is no other mention of the incident either in the minutes or in the accounts and no surviving correspondence of the Bridge Clerks William Hussey and David Baxter Lewis related to this incident. The opinion of counsel dated 25 November 1817 relates in general to the Bridge Warden's legal powers to pursue payment for damage to the bridge, but does not mention any specific incident.
The Indianah was owned by Newark Andrews, Uncle of Newark Burnickle.
    • Married Margaret Wright on 12th February 1812 at Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland. The wedding was witnessed by Mary Burnikell & Thomas Andrew. From 'The Monthly Magazine or British Register', vol VXXX111, part 1 for 1812: At Bishopwearmouth, Mr N. Burnikell, shipowner, to Margaret, daughter of John Wright Esq, late of Chester le Street. Wedding witnesses, Mary Burnikell and Thomas Andrew.

The 1841 census shows Newark (aged approx 55, a mariner) living with his wife Margaret (aged approx 50) at Hopper Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, with their children: Thomas (a shipwright, aged approx 25); Newark (a cordwainer. aged approx 20); and Isabella (aged approx 15).

The 1851 census shows Newark, then aged 63, living with his wife, Margaret (aged 64) and their granddaughter Mary Hodgson (daughter of their daughter Ann and Ann's husband Benjamin) (aged 11) at 23 Northumberland Street, Sunderland (where Newark would die before the year was out).

The Newcastle Guardian of 13th September 1851 reported on Newark's death as follows: "In Northumberland Street on the 6th inst, aged 63, Mr Newark Burnikell, mariner."
