Love & Unity

A History of the 'Love & Unity (1765-1780)

PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION - CHECK BACK LATER FOR UPDATES

Brig Built 1765

Owner Richard Andrew

Trading Rotterdam-London

Lost 1775 but recovered?

Brig

                    An 18th century Brig

The Love & Unity was a Brig probably similar to the image above. A Brig had two masts and was square rigged and was a common type of smaller trading vessel or warship. The usefulness of the Lloyds Shipping registers has been referred to previously and from the entries therein, relating to the Love & Unity, we are able to discover much useful information.  This, from  the entry in 1768:

1778 Love & Unity - Lloyds Register of Shipping Extract

The vessel is a Brig (Bg) and is captained by J. Andrews. It is a vessel of 110 tons and is of Single Deck construction with Beams (SDB). It was built in Whitby in 1765 (although the first voyage is dated November 1764, according to the Muster Roll below) and the owner is R. Andrews. The draught, fully laden is 11 ft. and it is trading between London & Rotterdam. Whilst it is a second class vessel (E), the material it is constructed of, is well found (1) and it it is therefore deemed to be capable of carrying a dry cargo. Finally, it was last surveyed in September 1767, signified by the number 9 in the final column.

1764

The first Muster roll for the Love & Unity is for a voyage commencing on 24th November 1764. This is the first voyage of a brand ne ship and shows Richard as Master and his son Newark, now age 17, as an able seaman, having graduated straight into this larger boat from the John & Mary, where he and his brother John appear to have undergone training in seamanship from a very young age over a period of 4 years. Whilst John has undergone the same period of training with his father in the John & Mary, as he is 2 years younger than Newark, he doesn't make his debut until 1767.

The following Muster Roll information has been extracted from the Whitby database and whatever information has been recorded, is shown.

Muster Roll 0121            24th November 1764 - ?

Master                Richard Andrew of Staithes

Mate                   Nicholas Harland of Staithes

Seaman              Roger Stonehouse

                           Richard Atkinson

                           Newark Andrew

1766

On this second voyage, in 1766, Newark has been promoted to Mate, he is obviously proving to be a very capable sailor, as he is still only 19 years of age.

Master                Richard Andrew of Staithes

Mate                   Newark Andrew of Staithes

Seaman              William Snowdon

                           Robert Bratt

                           John Unknown of Scotland

1767?

In what is believed to be 1767 (the year is illegible on the Ship's Muster), Richard and Newark are joined by John, in the position of Able Seaman, now aged 18.

1769

In 1769, John at age 20 still hasn't made it to Mate yet and is now shown as Servant for this voyage. Newark is again recorded as, Mate.

1771

In 1771 John has at last made it to Mate, perhaps under Newark's guidance, as the latter is now acting in the position of Seaman. With the first newspaper report found, there is also a clue of where they might be sailing between. The Caledonian Mercury reports on the 6th May that the Love and Unity has arrived at Leith, Scotland, from Redbridge near Southampton, with a cargo of Wood & Bark. Note the mis-naming of the ship as the, 'Loving Unity'!

1771 Newspaper Report

Caledonian Mercury - 6 May 1771

Redbridge is at the mouth the river Test, 5kms from the centre of Southampton and in the 17th & 18th centuries was an important ship building and trading centre.

1773

In 1773, John is now the Master, with John Potts acting as Mate. He has crewed on several of Richard's ships and is likely to have been an experienced sailor. There is no sign of Newark; His wife has just given birth, so possibly he is closer to home, or he could be on board another ship.

1774

In 1774 the Muster provides a little more information and it can be determined that the ship sailed on an eighteen month voyage from Shields to Liverpool, where the Mate departed and a new one joined. It then sailed on to Naples, Italy, where that Mate departed and yet another joined. Finally, the boat sailed to Holland, perhaps en-route to Shields, where it was lost on the Dutch coast on 26th September 1775.

The crew presumably made a safe return home eventually and indications are that the ship may also have been recovered, as not only do the entries continue in the Lloyds Registers until 1780, there is a report in the Hampshire Chronicle for 6th January 1777 to the extent that the Love & Unity has sailed from Portsmouth for Harwich.

There are other inconsistencies, which cannot be explained. The Lloyds Register for 1776, records the ship condition as A1 and rather than E1 but there is no accompanying reference made, concerning any improvements made, although a new survey was carried out in 1774. It records the Master as J. Anderson and states that the ship was made in Scarborough, rather than Whitby. Other factors such as tonnage, draught and year of build are consistent with earlier entries and the sailing route to Naples complies with the Ship's Muster detail and of course, the Ships Muster records beyond doubt that it is one and the same ship.

In the subsequent registers, the ship's condition returns to EI, maybe as a result of damage done when it ran aground and the further survey carried out in September 1777.

So, all the evidence points to the fact that the ship was indeed recovered and return to it's former trade between London & Rotterdam.

Was the vessel recovered from the Dutch coast, or were the authorities just very slow in updating their records, as the following entries are the entries in the Loyds Registers for 1778, 1779 & 1780?
