Richard & Mary

A history of 'The Richard & Mary' 1752-1754

Coaster
                     An 18c Coaster

1752

Richard acquired the Richard & Mary in 1752 but he still owns the Good Intent which is sailing under other Masters. There is no doubt that this is his first voyage in the Richard & Mary, as the Muster Roll states that his last ship was the Good Intent.

1st Voyage - 17 May 1752  to 11 November 1752  5 months 24 days

The indication here is that trade is up and down the East Coast certainly including Alnmouth. Henry Mead, Seaman, is only employed for part of the time and leaves the boat on 17th July. Although it isn't stated as to where he was discharged, his place is taken by Jas. Walby, whose abode is stated as Alemouth (Alnmouth), Northumberland. Taking the evidence of the  two newspaper reports below, relating to a later voyage it is reasonable to assume that the Richard and Mary is a Coaster similar to the Good Intent and that it is sailing between Whitby, Alnmouth, Dundee, Lynn (Kings Lynn) and possibly other ports in between, such as Gainsborough, Hull and Shields (South Shields)

All hands are discharged on 11th November, presumably in Whitby, or Staithes and the ship is laid up until the second voyage begins on 7th January 1753. (See below)

Muster Roll: 1149

1753

2nd Voyage17 Jan 1753  to 18 June 1753  5 months 1 day

For the second voyage, Richard is joined by George Dodds, who is obviously an experienced sailor, as he was last employed as Master on the Good Intent in Richards absence. William Greggs and Robert Ripworth were on the last voyage of the Richard & Mary and they are joined by Jno Harland, who does not appear  to have served on board previously. (or his previous boat is not known at the time the form was completed.)

During this voyage we know from the two newspaper reports below, that a cargo of beans and peas have been taken from Lynn to Dundee and that a return cargo of ballast is being carried back to Lynn. For these first two voyages a total seaman's tax of approximately £1-4s 2d has been paid. (It's hard to be exact as the scanned copy of the muster is not clear.

Richards signature is underneath all the entries.

3rd Voyage  18 June 1753 to 17 Nov 1753 – 4 months 29 days.

No sooner has the second voyage ended, than they are setting out on a third voyage, with possibly the same crew, as there may be some mis-readings of surnames. All are stated to have served on the Richard & Mary previously, including Edward Andrew, who is shown for the first time, (in the evidence that has been discovered so far). Edward Andrew is almost certainly Richards's brother, born in 1709 and therefore age 44 years.  All the crew live in Runswick, near Staithes. The only other Edward in the district is from Skinningrove and when he marries in 1755, he is described as a Husbandman. (small time farmer). So he seems unlikely.

The Richard and Mary is recorded as LOST in 1754 by Weatherall in the book, The Ancient Port of Whitby & It's Shipping, although no other record found to confirm this. There is no evidence of it sailing beyond 1754 and indeed, Richard returns to being Master of the Good Intent, as does his brother Edward.
