An 18th Century Coaster
This is the only Muster Roll found for the John & Mary and no newspaper reports have been discovered. It covers the whole of the period of Richard Andrew's ownership and is obviously not one voyage lasting four years. Payment to the Seamen's Fund has been made based on 9 months at sea, in each year and for the four years in one amount.
Undoubtedly, it did some trading, it is probably another 3 man Coastal Trading vessel, as in the illustration above. On board are Richard's two sons, Newark age 12 and Peter age 10 at the start in 1759 and 16 & 14 by the time their training is complete in 1763. Richard has diligently and patiently trained his 2 sons in the art of seamanship and both boys will go on to be Masters of their own boats in due course.

Was Sum part of ye time in ye Ship |
There is half an indication that Richard owned the ship previous to 1759, as he has entered the John & Mary as being the last ship he sailed in. However, no evidence has come to light to support this, so it has to be assumed to be an error in completing the document, The John & Mary is not mentioned by Weatherill in his book, 'The Ancient Port of Whitby & it's Shipping.
It is assumed that he sold the vessel, once it has served it's purpose and bought his next ship; the 'Love & Unity'.
